TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title EVALUATION OF THE SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF MEFLOQUINE AS INTERMITTENT PREVENTIVE TREATMENT FOR MALARIA IN PREGNANCY
Official scientific title EVALUATION OF THE SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF MEFLOQUINE AS INTERMITTENT PREVENTIVE TREATMENT FOR MALARIA IN PREGNANCY
Brief summary describing the background
and objectives of the trial
The spread of parasite resistance to SP, particularly in eastern Africa, and the significant overlap in some regions of malaria transmission and high prevalence of HIV infection, have raised concerns about the medium and long-term use of SP for IPTp. The evaluation of alternative antimalarials for IPTp is thus urgently needed. The study aims at comparing the safety, tolerability and efficacy of Mefloquine (MQ) to Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine (SP) as IPTp

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person
allocating the participants to the intervention arms
Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised Simple randomisation using a radomisation table created by a computer software program Sealed opaque envelopes Masking/blinding used
